First Lieutenant William C. Smith, Jr. For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in the vicinity of St. Laurent-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 6 June 1944. Landing with infantry assault elements, Lieutenant Smith courageously advanced across hazardous terrain, established an observation post and, despite heavy enemy fire, skillfully transmitted fire direction orders to artillery batteries. Lieutenant Smith's skillful and heroic actions contributed materially to the success of the invasion.
