Citation
As Administrative Chief for the Forward Aid Station for the Third Battalion Fourth Marines, Hospital Corpsman First Class Bachus skillfully treated numerous battle casualties, while maintaining the administrative files and medical records of his unit. On 18 May 1967, during an enemy artillery and rocket attack, Petty Officer Bachus, with complete disregard for his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire while assisting and treating Marine casualties in his unit's area and, when wounded himself, steadfastly ignored his painful injury and refused evacuation. Despite his wound, he continued to treat other casualties and arrange for their evacuation to a field hospital for further treatment. Only when assured that all other casualties were evacuated would he allow himself to be treated for his own injury. His superior technical skill and determined efforts won the respect and admiration of all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. By his leadership, professional competence, and unwavering devotion to duty throughout, Petty Officer Bachus upheld the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. |
