Staff Sergeant Roger Holbrook distinguished himself
by heroic action in connection with military operations
against a hostile force on 13 April 1965 while serving as
advisor to a friendly force in the Republic of Vietnam.
During the course of a heliborne operation, Sergeant Holbrook
guided and directed aircraft into the loading zone. He exposed
himself to hostile fire numerous times to effectively guide
the helicopters on an individual basis, and when told by
the Senior Advisor that he could leave on the fifth lift,
Sergeant Holbrook elected to remain until the mission was
accomplished. As he guided the last helicopter in, enemy
fire had increased to such intensity that three helicopters
received hits by small-arms fire. Sergeant Holbrook's heroic
actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the
United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself
and the military service.
