For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: On 1 April 1967, during Operation Junction City, Specialist Webb was serving as a communications specialist at his unit’s base camp.
When a Viet Cong force launched a heavy mortar barrage against the base camp, a generator which powered an essential communications system was damaged. Realizing that vital coordination of elements of the brigade conducting a search and destroy operation would be seriously disrupted, Specialist Webb ran from the communications center toward the generator. Enroute, he witnessed an exploding mortar round kill one soldier and severely wound another.
With total disregard for his own safety, Specialist Webb braved the flying shrapnel and moved to the wounded man’s position. Remaining exposed to the perilous mortar fire, he administered first aid to the soldier and carried him to a medical aid station. Returning through the hostile barrage to the generator, Specialist Webb ignored serious personal danger and initiated repairs on the damaged equipment throughout the remainder of the attack.
Specialist Four Webb’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty and personal bravery is in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
John S. Webb was born in and entered service from Dayton.
