For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.
Specialist Four Phillabaum distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 February 1971 while serving as a Rifleman with Company A, 1st Battalion, 52nd Infantry.
On that date, the company was in a night defensive position on a hilltop covered with dense undergrowth south of Gi Lang when it came under an intense barrage of small arms fire and rockets from a platoon-sixed North Vietnamese Army element. Even though the main force of the attack came directly at his own position, Specialist Phillabaum constantly exposing himself to the enemy rounds, continued to put out a devastating amount of suppressive fire on the advancing enemy soldiers.
By his timely actions and accurate fire, he was directly responsible for routing several of the attackers and preventing the enemy from overrunning the company perimeter.
Specialist Four Phillabaum’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 23rd Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
Paul H. Phillabaum was born in Dayton, entered service from Miamisburg.
