For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Hall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 4 July 1970 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company A, 5th Battalion, 46th Infantry. On that date, an element from the company was sweeping an area near Thuan Yen Two, south of Da Nang, when a concealed enemy explosive device was discovered. As the friendly force deployed around the explosive device, Sergeant Hall alertly detected movement in a clump of trees. Reacting immediately and with complete disregard for his personal safety, he moved into the wood line and spotted an enemy soldier preparing to hurl a grenade at the friendly element. Unhesitatingly engaging the insurgent, Sergeant Hall managed to eliminate him before he could throw the grenade. Through his timely and courageous actions, Sergeant Hall was instrumental in preventing friendly casualties. Sergeant Hall’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army
