For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Harbottle distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action of 28 June 1968, while serving as a machine gunner with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry during a combat mission near Thin Ba Lang, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large, well-fortified enemy force, Specialist Harbottle exposed himself to the intense hostile ground fire as he moved to a forward fighting position and personally assaulted two enemy bunker complexes and successfully neutralized them with a heavy barrage of accurate suppressive fire. Disregarding his own safety, Specialist Harbottle succeeded in capturing two enemy soldiers who were attempting to evade his unit. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
