For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Private First Class Laney distinguished himself by heroic actions on 19 July 1970, while serving with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. On the date cited above, Dau Tieng Base Camp came under heavy attack from a large enemy force. With complete disregard for his own safety, Private Laney exposed himself to a hail of enemy fire as he moved to his firing position and began placing suppressive counter mortar fire on the enemy positions. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. The bravery and devotion to duty exhibited by Private Laney are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
