For valorous achievement on 31 May 2009 during action against the enemy, while serving as a Senior Weapons Sergeant, Special Forces Detachment Alpha 9224 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Operational Detachment Alpha 9224 partnered with the Afghan National Police and assaulted a known Taliban stronghold occupied by 22 enemy soldiers. Approaching the compound, the coalition personnel came under hostile fire from a fortified structure, with four individuals being wounded, Staff Sergeant Maxwell immediately returned fire killing one enemy combatant allowing the Afghan Police to recover their wounded, additionally, he provided suppressive fire, enabling a grenade to be thrown killing the six insurgents occupying the structure. Staff Sergeant Maxwell’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military heroism and reflects distinct credit upon himself, the Combined Forces Special Operations Command-Afghanistan and the United States Army.
