Staff Sergeant Robert L. Chalmers, Infantry, 10th Infantry Regiment, United States Army.  For distinctive heroism in connection with military operations against the enemy on 21 January 1945 near LANDSCHEID, Luxembourg.  When the advance of his company was pinned down by intense enemy automatic fire in attempting to secure the enemy-held town of LANDSCHEID, Sergeant CHALMERS, a platoon sergeant, without thought of personal safety, went forward to observe and direct mortar fire upon the enemy weapon emplacement.  Fearlessly remaining in his exposed position and drawing the heavy enemy fire upon himself, Sergeant CHALMERS succeeded in liquidating the enemy strongpoint, thereby allowing our forces to resume their advance and attain their objective.  His indomitable courage exemplifies the highest traditions of the military service.  Entered military service from Ohio.
