The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Musician Richard Enderlin, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism from 1 July to 3 July 1863, while serving with Company B, 73rd Ohio Infantry in the area of Cemetery Ridge, during action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Musician Enderlin voluntarily took a rifle and served as a soldier in the ranks during the first and second days of the battle. Voluntarily and at his own imminent peril, he went into the enemy’s lines late during the nighttime hours of July 2nd and, under a sharp fire, rescued a wounded comrade. Richard Enderlin was promoted to Sergeant the next day. He received his award in September, 1897.
Note: The wounded comrade referenced in Richard Enderlin’s citation was Private George Nixon, grandfather of future U.S. President Richard Nixon. Private Nixon succumbed to the wounds he suffered at Gettysburg.
