The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class John M. Brown, USN Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as a Corpsman attached to the 22nd Marines (Reinforced), Sixth Marine Division on Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 July 1944, near the village of Agat.

Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class Brown, although painfully wounded by shrapnel, refused to be evacuated and with utter disregard for his own safety, attended the wounded while under heavy enemy fire. On the night of 24 July after four Japanese soldiers had been killed in an assault a few yards from him and more were expected; he courageously left his foxhole and treated a wounded man. Near the neck of Orote Peninsula on 25 July, he went forward under the fire of two enemy machine guns and attended three wounded men, saving their lives.

His courage and fearless devotion to duty were an inspiration to all front-line troops. His courageous conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

John Brown was born in and entered the service from Cincinnati, Ohio.
