For gallantry in action: Sergeant Coffman distinguished himself by heroic actions on 6 March 1970 while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam.
While established in their night laager position, Company B was attacked by enemy soldiers. Immediately, Sergeant Coffman placed his men in their defensive fighting positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Coffman placed devastating suppressive fire on the hostile force until the enemy was driven back.
Throughout the night, Sergeant Coffman moved from position to position checking on wounded men, ammunition supply, and enemy activity to their front. When an emergency resupply mission was flown in, Sergeant Coffman helped remove the ammunition and distribute it to his positions. And administer life saving first aid until medical help arrived.
His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the saving of several lives. Sergeant Coffman’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
Staff Sergeant Coffman was killed in combat five days after this action and was unaware of this Silver Star award.
He was born and raised in Marion and entered the service with his home of record in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio.
