Specialist Four Gary E. Dotson
Gary Dotson

For heroism in ground combat against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 26 March 1969.  Specialist Dotson distinguished himself by valorous actions while serving in Company D, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry, on a combat operation near Fire Support Base Jack, Republic of Vietnam.  As Specialist Dotson, who was serving as the lead man, was nearing the summit of a hill, he noticed signs of enemy movement in the area.  Immediately motioning his platoon to get down, he proceeded to the top of the hill to scan the area.  As he crossed over the hilltop, an unknown size enemy force attacked with an extremely heavy volume of fire.  He immediately returned fire with his M-16 rifle, assaulting the enemy position as he fired.  The entrenched hostile force increased its fire power and he was seriously wounded.  His courageous assault drew the enemy fire to himself, allowing his comrades to retaliate, forcing the insurgents to retreat.  Specialist Dotson’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
