For heroism in ground combat against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.
Specialist Four Justice distinguished himself on 20 January 1972 while serving as a crewman aboard a UH-1H (Huey) helicopter during a flight enroute to Quang Tri, Republic of Vietnam. When an accompanying aircraft took several damaging hits from enemy fire, it was forced down into a river and began to burn. As Specialist Justice’s aircraft descended to a hover over the wreckage to attempt rescue operations, they came under intense enemy small arms fire.
Ignoring the enemy fire, Specialist Justice exited the aircraft and assisted in extracting the men from the river and boarding them on the rescue aircraft. The aircraft, still under enemy fire, departed the area. Specialist Four Justice’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
Donald Lee Justice was born in Sandusky, Ohio; entered service from Marion, Ohio and currently resides in Radnor, Ohio in Delaware County
