For gallantry in action: Sergeant Williams distinguished himself by heroic actions on 15 May 1968, while serving as a tank commander with A Troop, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry in the Republic of Vietnam. During an intense fire fight, the first platoon was unable to advance due to small arms fire coming from well-concealed enemy bunkers. Sergeant Williams volunteered to clear the bunkers. With complete disregard for his own safety, he moved through intense enemy fire and destroyed the enemy bunkers. His action resulted in ten enemy killed plus the capture of many enemy weapons. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the enemy force. Sergeant Williams’ personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
