United States Army, Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile) 8th Cavalry
For heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class May distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 5 December 1969 while serving as rifleman during a ground reconnaissance mission in Phuoc Long Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit was engaged by a numerically superior enemy force, disregarding his own safety, he ran over 60 meters to the point of heaviest contact to treat the wounded and carry them to the rear. He then returned to the contact area and put out a heavy volume of suppressive fire. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
