PFC Willard C. Humphrey
Willard Humphrey

For gallantry in action:  Private First Class Humphrey distinguished himself by heroic actions of 15 September 1969, while serving as a medic with Company D, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. While established in a night ambush position, elements of Company D came in contact with a reinforced squad of enemy soldiers.  During the initial exchange of fire, the platoon leader and several other men were seriously wounded.  Immediately, Private Humphrey, with complete disregard for his own safety, maneuvered through the holocaust of fire to a wounded man’s position.  Upon arrival there, Private Humphrey quickly evacuated the man to a safe area and administered first aid.  Spotting another injured man in the open, Private Humphrey again moved through the perilous area to his position.  After ensuring that the two wounded men had been treated and were in a secure location, Private Humphrey began to treat a third man.  After the medical evacuation helicopter was called to the area, Private Humphrey treated his wounded platoon leader.  His valorous actions were responsible for saving several lives.  Private Humphrey’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
