While serving with Company A, Third Amphibian Tractor Battalion, First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam, Lance Corporal CAMPBELL distinguished himself by his calm presence of mind under fire. On 26 August 1968, he was operating an amphibian tractor in support of a search and destroy operation being conducted in Quang Nam Province. While proceeding to a designated position to establish a command post, his tracked vehicle suddenly came under intense antitank rocket and small arms fire from a large, well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army force. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Lance Corporal CAMPBELL skillfully maneuvered his amphibian tractor to a covered position, allowing the embarked infantry unit to dismount without sustaining any casualties. As the Marines deployed, the tracked vehicle came under intense enemy mortar fire. Realizing that his present position was untenable, Lance Corporal CAMPBELL ignored the hostile rounds impacting near him as he rapidly maneuvered his amphibian tractor out of the hazardous area and successfully negotiated a steep incline to a position of relative safety. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit’s mission. Lance Corporal CAMPBELL’S courage, superb professional ability and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger reflect great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the Naval Service.
