For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy as Corpsman, Company E, 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division, 1Marine Expeditionary Force, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM II on 26 April 2004. As a platoon from Company E conducted a security patrol, they became heavily engaged and suffered numerous casualties. Simultaneous to the enemy’s attack on the platoon’s security patrol, enemy forces fired from a mosque into the company’s defensive position. Bullets impacting all around him, he sprinted 40 meters and loaded the company medical evacuation vehicle to retrieve the friendly casualties. Arriving at the casualty collection point, he then ran 30 meters across a fire-swept courtyard to the building where Marines continued to fight against the enemy. Once inside the building, he assessed the casualties despite the numerous rocket propelled grenades and machine gun rounds impacting his position. He then carried and guided four casualties to the vehicle, making three separate trips. He remained resolute, continuing to escort the wounded while firing his service pistol at enemy personnel in adjacent buildings. As he helped a Marine to the vehicle, fragmentation from enemy fire struck him in the hand. After loading the vehicle, he continued to provide medical care as the Marines were evacuated. By his zealous initiative, courageous actions, and exceptional dedication to duty, Petty Officer Third Class Duty reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
