For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in Laos. Assigned to C Troop, 2nd Squadron/17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Airborne, Chief Warrant Officer Fleming distinguished himself on 13 March 1971 while serving as aircraft commander of an AH-1G (Cobra) armed helicopter during an aerial reconnaissance mission in support of Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops in Laos. As he began his reconnaissance of the area, Chief Warrant Officer Fleming’s aircraft came under intense enemy antiaircraft fire. He immediately engaged the enemy position with accurate suppressive fire, allowing the command-and-control helicopter to withdraw safely, but was then engaged by a second enemy position. Chief Warrant Officer Fleming altered his attack and directed suppressive fire silencing both positions. He continued to engage the enemy and marked them for subsequent air strikes.
Chief Warrant Officer Fleming’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
Gregory R. Fleming entered the service from Columbus, Ohio. He retired as a CWO4 after 35 years of combined service on active duty, inactive & active reserves and National Guard.
He received a total of three Distinguished Flying Cross awards along with two Air Medals with “V” device during his service in S.E. Asia.
