Captain Roy N. McCann distinguished himself by heroism while participating in aerial flight as an AC-130 Gunship Navigator over Laos on 5 March 1971. On that date, while flying as an AC-130 Gunship Navigator, he contributed immeasurably to one of most devastating attacks ever mounted against the hostile supply network in Southeast Asia, the infamous Ho Chi Minh Trail. With calm and deliberate precision, he positioned the aircraft over each target despite the barrages of hostile antiaircraft fire encountered, and then rapidly and skillfully programmed his Fire Control Computer to place his ordnance as close to the target as possible. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain McMann reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
