For heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: On this date, Specialist Born was serving as a squad leader with his company during a reconnaissance in force operation. At approximately 1540 hours, the lead element discovered an enemy communications wire. As they began to follow the wire, the element made heavy contact with an undetermined size enemy force utilizing automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenade fire. Specialist Born immediately moved his squad forward to assist the lead element, which was pinned down by the enemy fire. Without regard for his personal safety, he moved from position to position among his men through the hail of hostile rounds directing their fire. His squad’s effective suppressive fire enabled the lead elements to regroup. Joining them in a direct assault on the enemy positions, Specialist Born put forth devastating fire with his personal weapon and skillfully coordinated the fire and movement of his men. His courageous determination and dynamic leadership were instrumental in limiting friendly losses contributed significantly to the victory achieved by his unit.
