For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Private First Class Moses distinguished himself by heroic actions on 8 January 1970, while serving with Company A, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam.
While on a reconnaissance operation, elements of Company A came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, with complete disregard for his own safety, Private Moses began to place a devastating volume of fire on the enemy with his M-60 machine gun. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Private Moses’ bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
James Elroy Moses achieved the rank of Specialist 4 before leaving the service. He is the recipient of another Bronze Star with “V”.
Mr. Moses was born in Dayton and entered service from Dayton. He currently resides in Germantown, Ohio in Montgomery County.
The action described in the citation was at the battle of Black Virgin Mountain, otherwise known as “Nui Ba Den” located in Tay Ninh Province, northwest of Saigon. This is the same battle in which Barry Smith (OMHOF 2021) and Marcus Collins (OMHOF 2024) participated and were decorated for valor. They are both here today as well. We’ve recently discovered that all three were in the same platoon. They can truly be referred to as one of Ohio’s “Band of Brothers”. Barry and Marc say that, in their opinion, James Moses was the best M-60 gunner they ever knew of in Vietnam.
