For valor and extraordinary achievement during ground combat operations against enemy forces in the City of Buhriz, Iraq on 17 June 2004.

As a sniper at a rooftop strongpoint for Foxtrot Troop, 4th Cavalry,
3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Corporal Cowles eliminated four enemy personnel at ranges of 400 to 500 meters. Despite enduring countless hours under heavy small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire, he maintained his position with unwavering resolve and patience. Corporal Cowles then executed precise counter-sniper maneuvers in to neutralize two enemy snipers who were aware of his location, a feat made possible only by his advanced scanning techniques. His superior marksmanship, selfless dedication, and steadfast commitment to the safety of his fellow soldiers on the battlefield uphold the finest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon him, Task Force Danger, and the United States Army.

Born in Ashtabula, Corporal Michael R Cowles entered the service as a proud resident of his hometown exemplifying the spirit, courage, excellence and patriotic traditions of the citizens of Ashtabula.
