The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain William Jennings Barthelmas, Jr. for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force over North Vietnam as a Tactical Fighter Pilot of the 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 6234th Tactical Fighter Wing, 13th Air Force, on 27 July 1965.
On that date, Captain Barthelmas was a member of a flight of F-105 Fighter-Bomber aircraft tasked with the mission of destroying a surface-to-air missile site near Hanoi, North Vietnam. This strike was the first attack by fighter aircraft against an operational SAM site in military history and its destruction was of paramount importance. Hostile ground fire in the target area was exceptionally heavy and Captain Barthelmas’ aircraft sustained major damage before he could deliver his ordnance.
With complete disregard for his own safety and knowing full well that his aircraft could crash at any moment, Captain Barthelmas unhesitatingly elected to continue his mission. After dropping his ordnance squarely on target, he remained in the area to provide air cover for the other members of the flight. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Barthelmas has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
Captain Barthelmas was born in and entered the service from Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio. He is the recipient of two additional Silver Stars.
