Hospital Man Glenn O. Thompson Class of 2016

Silver Star Medal

Silver Star Medal

Hospital Man Glenn O. Thompson, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces near Tong-myon, Korea, on 19 June 1951. On that date, Company G was attacking a numerically superior enemy force, well entrenched on Hill 872. During the attack, an intense barrage of enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire forced the company to seek cover, inflicting numerous casualties. Hospital Man Thompson, serving as Medical Corpsman with the company, moved swiftly through exposed, fire-swept terrain to treat and evacuate wounded personnel. While moving to assist a severely wounded comrade, Hospital Man Thompson was painfully wounded, but refused to be evacuated and continued to minister to the wounded. When loss of blood ultimately forced his evacuation, Hospital Man Thompson assisted other casualties to the aid station, where he was treated for his wounds. The gallantry, courage and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Hospital Man Thompson on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
