Sergeant Richard J. Prohaska Class of 2015

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

Richard J. Prohaska, Sergeant, Field Artillery, Company B, 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion, for gallantry in action on 9 April 1945 near Obbach, Germany. While reconnoitering an area near Obbach, Germany, Sergeant Prohaska learned that two members of a wire crew of the 232nd Infantry had been seriously wounded at enemy road block. Joining a volunteer rescue party, he crawled 300 yards to the wounded men under intense enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire and, with the aid of the other members of the rescue group, carried them to a sheltered position where they were given first aid. Remaining with the injured men until dusk, Sergeant Prohaska and another man brought up a vehicle and evacuated the wounded men to an aid station. His outstanding courage and unselfish devotion to duty reflect distinct credit upon himself and the military service of the United States. Entered military service from Cleveland, Ohio.
