Specialist Four John R. Dippold Class of 2015

Bronze Star Medal with

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device

For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile enemy force while serving as a squad leader with Company C, 2nd Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 May 1969. While he was a point man, his squad came under sporadic small arms fire from a treeline in front of them. After returning fire from their M-79 grenade launchers the squad began to advance on the enemy position. As they approached the position the enemy began firing their small arms at a greatly increased pace, resulting in their platoon leader telling them to take up defensive positions and return fire. After gunships and U. S. Air Force planes bombed the enemy positions, the squad was still pinned down. After losing contact with the platoon leadership, Specialist Dippold with complete disregard for his own safety, made the decision to seek a position of safety for his squad. He then led his men through the smoke and enemy fire to a position of safety. Later that evening the squad was reunited with the rest of his platoon. Specialist Dippold's bravery and leadership were instrumental to his squad reaching safety and were an inspiration to his men. His valorous actions reflect the highest traditions of the military service and bring great credit on himself, his unit and the United States Army.
