Sergeant Charles W. Carmen Class of 2015

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

CHARLES W. CARMEN, Sergeant, 47th Infantry, who distinguished himself by gallantry in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945 at Oberkirchen, Germany. During an advance against strongly defended enemy emplacements, Sgt. Carmen's company was subjected to a fierce Tank and Infantry counter - attack. Quickly redeploying his squad in a more advantageous position, Sgt. Carmen then ordered his rocket launcher gunner to move to a nearby point of vantage in order to gain better observation for a flank shot at one of the enemy tanks. With complete disregard for personal safety, he voluntarily exposed himself to direct enemy observation and fire to lay down covering fire for his gunner who was moving to a firing position. By his accurate fire, Sgt. Carmen killed five of the enemy and wounded at least ten, enabling the gunner to destroy the enemy tank. Sgt. Carmen's aggressive leadership and courageous actions contributed materially to the successful repelling of the enemy forces. Entered military service from Ohio.
