Sergeant Charles W. Kennedy Class of 2014

Medal of Honor

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

For Gallantry in action: Sergeant Kennedy distinguished himself by heroic actions on 16 September 1968, while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry in the Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under an intense enemy attack, Sergeant Kennedy was waiting for a friendly listening post to return to the perimeter. When he heard a call for help, Sergeant Kennedy, with complete disregard for his own safety, ran through intense enemy fire as he went out beyond the perimeter to aid the wounded man. He carried the wounded man back to the safety of the perimeter and found a medic to treat him, When Sergeant Kennedy returned to his position he learned that there was another wounded man outside the perimeter. He again braved intense enemy fire as he went to the man’s rescue. After delivering the second man to the care of a medic he returned to the perimeter and began to pour devastating fire into the advancing enemy force. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. Sergeant Kennedy’s personal bravery, aggressiveness and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
