Sergeant Lovell L. McKee Class of 2013

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

For gallantry in action against a hostile force on 9 November 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant McKee distinguished himself by valiant actions while serving as forward observer attached to B Troop, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry. On that date B Troop was conducting a search and clear mission in the Que Son Valley when contact was made with a North Vietnamese Army regiment, armed with recoilless rifles, mortars and automatic weapons. Sergeant McKee was with the reserve element which was instructed to return to the landing zone and secure it for evacuation of the wounded. He quickly moved back through enemy fire to assist in this task. Taking over command of his vehicle, Sergeant McKee unhesitatingly moved throughout the battle area, assisting disabled vehicles and removing wounded to the landing zone for evacuation. On one occasion, Sergeant McKee shot and killed an enemy soldier who was about to fire at a non-commissioned officer who was dismounting his track. Without regard for his own safety, Sergeant McKee exposed himself to enemy fire innumerable times during the seven and one-half hour battle as he loaded some 25 to 30 wounded men aboard his vehicle. Sergeant McKee's unquestionable valor in close combat with a numerically superior hostile force and his unselfish concern for the lives of his fellow soldiers are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
