Warrant Officer John J. Arvai Class of 2013

Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Distinguished Flying Cross

For heroism, while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam: Warrant Officer Arvai distinguished himself on 5 February 1970 while piloting a helicopter ambulance during a rescue mission in the A Shau Valley. An American Marine unit had sustained two severe casualties while engaged in heavy fighting with an enemy force. Having received the urgent request for helicopter evacuation from the Marine unit, Mister Arvai immediately volunteered for the mission. While enroute to the pickup site, Mister Arvai coordinated a rendezvous with friendly helicopter gunships to furnish support for the operation. Upon arrival, Mister Arvai found the terrain too hazardous to attempt a landing and was forced to utilize a rescue hoist and jungle penetrator. Mr. Arvai skillfully maneuvered the helicopter into position, ignoring sporadic enemy fire and coordinated the evacuation with the ground forces. Throughout the operation, Mister Arvai maintained a calm attitude, ensuring a safe evacuation. Mister Arvai's actions were instrumental in the prompt evacuation of the wounded soldiers, affording them medical treatment at a rear evacuation hospital. Warrant Officer Arvai's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
