Corporal Joseph E. Sayre Class of 2011

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device

Corporal Joseph E. Sayre, Infantry, United States Army, Company E, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, is cited for heroism in action against an armed enemy on 26 October 1951, near Pokka, Korea. When the patrol was ambushed by the enemy, Corporal SAYRE was wounded in the hand and arm. In spite of his painful wounds, he displayed exceptional courage and fortitude by laying down effective covering fire for his comrades. Not until the last man had reached safety did Corporal SAYRE withdraw to join them. Ignoring his injuries, Corporal SAYRE assisted in the reorganization of the patrol and refused medical attention until assured that this had been accomplished. His valiant behavior under fire saved the patrol from possible annihilation or capture. Corporal SAYRE's heroism reflects great credit on himself and the military service. Entered federal service from Ohio.
