Specialist Four Leo H. Connelly Class of 2011

Air Medal with "V" Device

United States Army

Air Medal with "V" Device

For heroism while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam: On 1 February 1968, Specialist Connelly was serving as crew chief on an unarmed helicopter when a call was monitored from a heavily engaged friendly ground force requesting evacuation of several seriously wounded men. The aircraft was immediately flown to the scene of the battle. Enroute, Specialist Connelly skillfully coordinated with the other crew members to make possible the most expeditious and efficient handling of the wounded and resupplies. When the helicopter landed, Specialist Connelly ignored the hail of hostile rocket propelled grenade rounds being directed at his ship and quickly accomplished the task of unloading the much needed supplies and loading the casualties aboard the aircraft. He provided constant comfort and aid to the wounded men on the flight to the medical aid station. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he then made numerous return flights to the battle area to deliver ammunition, food, and water to the engaged infantry and armor elements. His courageous and determined efforts were instrumental in the saving of many friendly lives and contributed significantly to the successful outcome of the hostile encounter. Specialist Four Connelly's actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
