Specialist Four James G. Shannon Class of 2006

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device

Specialist Four Shannon distinguished himself by heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam, on 11 January 1968, while serving as a member of the 272nd Military Police Company. Specialist Shannon was a member of a military police squad stationed at the Bong Son Police Station, Hoai Nhon District, Republic of Vietnam, when that facility came under attack by an estimated 200 North Vietnamese Army soldiers and Viet Cong. The enemy supported and conducted the attack using rockets, grenades, satchel charges and heavy automatic and small arms fire. The attack was launched against all four edges of the perimeter simultaneously. Throughout the three hours duration of the battle, numerous assaults were made from all directions in an attempt to breach the wire and overrun the compound. Specialist Shannon was assigned to the west perimeter of the compound as a strong point within the defensive positions of the National Police. He continually exposed himself to intense enemy fire as he moved from position to position, rallying and directing the fires of the defending National Policemen wherever the attack was most intense. Along his portion of the perimeter, Specialist Shannon added his fire to the to those of the National Police. Specialist Shannon’s courageous actions and aggressive leadership in close combat reflected his loyalty and devotion to duty. His exemplary performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
