Warrant Officer James E. Miller
Class of 2004

Navy Commendation Medal

United States Army

Warrant Officer James E. Miller. For heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer James E. Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 September 1967 while serving as aircraft commander of a resupply helicopter on a mission to bring supplies and ammunition to an outpost on top of Nuiy Jai mountain, near Soc Trang in the Republic of Viet Nam. Upon approaching the area with two gunships as escorts, Warrant Officer Miller saw that the top of the mountain was covered with clouds. He determined that the only way to reach the outpost was to approach the mountain under the clouds and proceed at slow speed up the mountain over Viet Cong positions until he broke out of the clouds. Warrant Officer Miller’s first two attempts to deliver the supplies were unsuccessful, against the advice of the gunships, with disregard for his own safety, he insisted on a third attempt. Despite heavy enemy fire and the weather, he successfully reached the outpost and delivered badly needed ammunition which allowed the outpost to continue its mission. Warrant Officer Miller’s actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and bring great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
